They raced through my mind, and insecurities conquered my mind slowly.

I thought I'd be over this sort of petty jealousy, and that I'd know what to do this time. But it wasn't happening, and other things were happening. Things go awry unfairly fast sometimes.

"Honestly, I think you need to open up more.", said my frank friend. I was about to rebut about my awesome dance skills, but I kept my mouth shut as I realised, he made a good point.

I'm not true to myself, at least, not as much as I should be. I put on a mask of quick wit in the hopes of gaining presence amongst people around me, but I have a forgetful impression, and I wondered why.

People walk away not knowing anything about me at all. I have irreversibly marked myself down as just another clown in the eyes of some.

It may be too late in this stage of my life.

Friends come and go, but does love? With every investment that I'd devoted in the past, I either discovered that she wasn't quite right for me, or that I wouldn't be right for her.

Once again I find myself in a situation where I maybe an unwanted investor, except this time, I'm dead set on not letting go just yet. I've given up too easily in the past, only to see the love I wanted to have stare me in the face, and introduce the chosen suitor to me.

I'm alone, not desperate, but I still feel this aching hole inside myself from time to time, forever cursing my every breath. And it hurts.

-Jason

Whoa Nelly...

The short:

Life ain't always sunshine and daisies, there will be downpours.

We're tempted to run for cover, but running through the rain is no better than taking your time and walking steady, because you end up drenched anyway.

The biggest difference between walking and running is, when you walk steady, you'd be less likely to trip over yourself and feel stupid about it when it's over.

Look before you leap, it's worth the trouble.

Oh yeah, and smile damn it, it's not so bad, it could be much worse. =)

The Long:

Damn, these long intervals between posts is kinda weird, blogging never was a habit nor necessity unless I have something I absolutely have to say... type... whatever.

Back from Boston a long time now, about a good 3-4 months. For the most part, a life changing and enriching experience, credit given to the wonderful people who were with me throughout those magical days that I'd spent there.

After digesting the events that occurred, the things that I did, the things that happened to me, the adrenaline has died down, the thoughts accumulated and sorted through... sort of... whatever.

I am haunted, tortured by the sense that... things will never be the same. Not because I'm back here in Singapore and that Gambit summer is over and that I may never have a similar experience ever again, but because I may have screwed things up for good.

It's Christmas right now, and to me that means that another year in this life has passed. Another year full of rising promise and priceless memories, also full of regret and unsettled business.

I'll get to the point now. It is a bad habit of mine to sit on things and obsess about it, especially when it has to do with critically assessing things I did wrong. Mainly because I never like it when it's my fault, but I'd like to think that this is because I want to improve so that it doesn't happen again.

But recently it has dawned upon me that scrambling desperately for answers will just make things worse, and I now take a different stand that seems to be the right answer so far.

To calm myself down, knowing better what it means to "take it slow", to rid myself of this stupid hot blooded nature of mine. Taming that bull to not break anymore china in the shop.

As always I'm venturing through life, having fun and trying not being stupid about it, doing what I like and hopefully doing the best I can.

Merry Christmas everybody

-Jason

The Future! :D

Long time since i dusted off this blog lol. Suffice to say a truck tonne of shit has happened.

This fat cats goin to Boston for two months. SHI-POW!

So anyways, met all the folks in this years summer programme batch, they're all pretty cool peeps.

I'm just psyched that I've finally hooked onto something real, for the first time, i feel like i might actually make a difference *sniff* =)

I haven't forgotten about Concept 7 though, and I will hope for the best that I can still contribute while i'm away, though I sincerely doubt i'll be able to work on anything of significance on my laptop alone.

Whatever little drawing skills i had have now flushed down the tube, but rest assured I will try to get back into the swing of things.

The orientation has been a magnificent experience, learning more about myself and others everyday, tunneling towards that sliver of light that is the hint to my future career.

I mean seriously, this is what it is all about. What little amount of knowledge and experience that i've scrambled for so desperately can finally amount to something. And it's not just the participation that has me psyched, but it's about the start to learning the good stuff, from the right place, and the right people.

I've found my runway, and now the takeoff is gonna be for real. (at least until NS)

Well I know that fantasies are fantasies, so I'll just work towards making them a reality huh ;P

Anyways, super tired, broken sleep cycle is broken.

I'm out

HTI BLOG SHIFTED

To make thing easier for everybody and to keep things simpler and neater, my HTI blog is now at

http://crasonghti.blogspot.com/

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

Eternal spitshine of the insane mind

VS

So we did this exercise in class today, kinda felt similar to meditation to me. So with each breath, i exhaled the bad and inhaled the good.

Then came the part where we try to visualise a figure of inspiration. People i knew in real life started coming to mind, then came fictatious characters and mascots of inspiration.

Lo and behold, before me stood two figures, or things i should say.

Mickey Mouse, and the viewcube from maya.

So the cube started off with hinting that i urgently needed to do the assignment due today. Mickey told him to back off, and that i could easily finish it on time, and proceeded to ask me how my day was going so far.

I didnt answer, cause I thought to myself,

"I'm in a classroom meditating, and mickey mouse is talking to me."

"Am I insane?"

Before i could get into anything, the exercise was over. Oh well.

Its a mad, mad world.

Update on "A Game That Creates"

So. Improvements or should i say slight addition of rules to Round Robin that spoke of earlier. We decided that to bring us all together in a more engaging fashion, we would attempt to link each others stories to our own story in an attempt to make them appear to be from the same imaginary world or universe.

Be warned, mildly adult language is used. (Just to say I warned you, but we were a little insane.)

Quality is not the best so i will attempt to summarise the universe we created.

There is a girl called Flower, probably the most recurring character so far. She has a brother, called Tower (yes folks, it rhymes). As it would seem, Flower chanced upon their long lost father who is a drunk homeless naked man, and in her joy...... she slept next to him..... naked...... in the underground pass...........

OKAY MOVING ON.

A gigantic midget happens to produce twice the mass of food he ate whenever he clears his bowels. His mother is angry because the house became full of his faeces. Along comes our heroine Flower who comes to this house full of faeces, and says "I'm Hungry!", before collapsing on the ground.

Two unlinked stories follow (we had no idea how to link these im afraid).

1.A sword by the name of excalibur that was so heavy that nobody could seem to lift it. one day an old lady discovers it and tried to take it. She howls a loud warcry, and her muscles bulge into the size of a giant, but she fails to lift excalibur. And so the legend continues.....

2.An obese lady goes shopping with two big baskets, who fell down badly. She hurt her head so badly she went for plastic surgery.

After Surgery she is too skinny to lift her two big baskets. So she gets the nurse to help her carry them, who in turn falls down badly too, and also goes for plastic surgery........

Stay tuned for an ending to this tragic tale......

____________________________________________________________________

So like I mentioned earlier, we happened to lose ourselves in the process and ended up with completely senseless yet fun stories. The process is actually mor challenging now, and the stories dont need to make sense at all.

Conclusively the modification allowed us to relate to each story somewhat better since they were from a cohesive universe.

Operation Round Robin Universe is a success!

DGDD 01

Jason Hwang

Ka Sing

Yu Xuan

Yen Hsien

And Daryl.

A Game That Creates.

So For the HTI module we were made to play a game in groups of 5. Each person with a piece of paper and pencil were to write a single sentence that would be the start of the story, followed by passing it to the next person, and that person would add a sentence to that introduction, and the process repeats itself, eventually ending on a decided limit of turns.

The formula for this process is also known as Round Robin, which could be applied to anything that involves a group of people that take turns.

So upon arriving late to the class (I knocked the batteries out of my alarm in my sleep), within moments i found myself having to write up something interesting on other peoples pieces of paper.

Least to say it yielded extremely strange results due to the varied personalities that were present. It was refreshingly fun despite the slight awkwardness now and then from facing a different plot twist during each new turn.

The game can range from a quick and fast way to churn out ideas or a long process that can allow unfamiliar acquaintances to get to know each other through the game.

The positive outcomes could be multiple stories for a project, creating or improving friendships, and most obviously an alternative to killing time (just kidding...).

So a quickly and badly drawn example of what the process of round robin is like.....

So moving on, I actually see this simple game as a ruleset that has limitless applications where creativity and social improvements apply.

I will be posting pictures of the outcomes from this exercise soon.

New Project!

Yay! Structured thinking, the study of each systems structure in both literary and scientific theory.

It started from a movement originating in the study of linguistics by Ferdinand De Saussure. Eventually finding itself being applied to more than literature. Anthropology, Sociology, Literary theory and criticism, and a few other areas of studies.

From these studies, Structuralists formed a few common beliefs with regards to 'intellectual trends'. Firstly, the structure determines the position of each element that form a whole. Secondly, every system has a structure. Thirdly, structuralists mostly study the 'structural' laws of the elements coexistence with one another. Lastly, the structures are the essence and truth of what lies behind the meaning of a system.

Currently, the extent to which Structuralism can go is not so significant for me, but rather its essence of mindset is almost tailor-made for how games are made.

Firstly Games nowadays have different genres and sub-categories, each which can be said to be a system of a game. By structuralist thinking, each game genre has a certain structure. Which is exactly right, because game genres are defined by the structure of gameplay.

Next, each and every factor or 'element' plays a role that coexists with every other 'element' in order to form a whole system of a game, which we would refer to as game mechanics.

Lastly, although within each genre the games will differ completely in style and taste, it is the genre of gameplay that determines the true intent of the games appearance.

Puzzle games such as Portal or Tetris are completely different in style, but both are structured to make one think logically.

The same can be applied to all games, and this much taken from structuralism helps me to systematically understand games as a whole.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest is continued in the next post...

Progress!

A re-evaluation of my goal has made me reorganise my priorities though, most importantly, maya is now second place, first place is now the ability to draw.

I can not stress how much drawing makes the difference between a technical artist and a concept artist.

A technical artist may have AWESOME 3d modeling skills, but he wont be able to achieve anything in the "design" department as much as he would like to give major input for any part of the design process.

A technical artist, who takes the well drawn concept of a concept artist, and models it into 3d.

But in a lot of cases, the concept artists can not only draw the concept, but model it just as well as the technical artist can. And being a concept artist is something i would like to be.

So with the start of the new semester, its gonna serious business from now. Even in a game like pong, you play the role of a 2 dimensional table tennis paddle, and hit that ball back at your adversary, all in the name of reaching the end.

And from what I gather, Dave, who taught at Full Sail University, was a character, who made it a point to bring that role playing experience to everyone he met or taught. And even though I may not have known him, strangely I do understand a lot of the passion that flows through his students or people whom he had met.

With that, a new generation has a benchmark to meet, and new imaginary dungeons to explore.

It's a new dawn Ladies and Gentlemen, lets get crackin :)

To all the Pioneers who continue to inspire even in death. And these are the big ones. Those who were once easy going are now going insane from the amount of debbuging needed.

We got Flash game due up first, followed closely by our board game and Journal. after which we have a week before the website is due.

It is after these deadlines that we proceed to carry out a well deserved break from the madness of design. People will drop all their worries and cares and enjoy themselves in anyway theycan think of.

But not me, nope. I will be taking a break alright, but the worry doesnt stop at the assignments.

I will be spending my holidays earning my funds for a desperately urgent computer overhaul, and more importantly, ill be contemplating a class change in the course.

Yeah, i am considering a transfer to DGDD 02.

Now, to clarify, I am in no real rush to join class 2, but i just feel that i will blossom in that class as well as feel more fulfilled as a designer.

I don't hold anything against my class at all, no. I love class 1, but working with the people in the class makes me feel rather distant. I guess it's what i call the class culture, and somehow i feel like a foreigner in my own class.

Hmm, in my case alone, i feel more connected to the people in class 2 as opposed to those in class 1.

Simple brainstorming becomes a chore because my current classmates, despite the amount of effort put in, fail to think of anything that inspires me.

I am in no way calling them inferior at all, but rather i feel that their ideas revolve a little to much to their own likes and wants, making for a very abrasive feel to the overall product.

They hold in their minds too many preconceptions of what certain things should be and thus eliminate the possibility of compromise.

This issue along with the fact that I hang out a lot more with the class 2 people to the extent where some forget at times that i am in class 1.

To me, its not because of melcolms drawing skills or because i have more friends in class 2 that i want to have a transfer, but rather that even in our free time, i find that a concept made on the spot with those guys is undoubtedly more fulfilling.

However i live with the guilt of possibly betraying the feelings of my classmates, and im sure that some people would hold that against me.

But my current class is already so detached from me that i am usually the last person to be chosen if i keep quiet and stay passive.

Now i dont usually keep quiet nor stay passive but the fact that my prescence in my own class is so distant, i really dont see why they would do any worse without me.

I will stay in class 1 for the mean time, but ill consider this seriously....

Till next time, cheers.

Excuses....

Woo. exciting day today, saw the new Ip Man movie, supposedly the first accurate depiction in history, though a book i have written by Ip Chun proves otherwise.... but onto other stuff, im a bit sad that our demonstration was cut short, but what the public doesnt know means more tricks up my sleeves. =)

Training for todays public Wing Chun demonstration improved my technique by quite a lot, and ive also learnt a whole lot too.

Watching the movie brought about some thoughts that reminded me of truths.

Well for one, it reminded me of the ruthlessness of Wing Chun. I tell you now, Chinese mystery aside, Wing Chun is a life taker.

If you learn another kind of martial art and you read the sentence above, you are probably trying to justify your style right now, and would question the effectiveness of mine and then we would proceed with a back and forth arguement about which style is superior. The arguement will never end.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to superiority of styles. Just like how theres no such thing as the best genre of music.

To each their own. It is a phrase, short and sweet, and could never be more true.

I am not learning how to destroy a person with my bare hands, i am learning a martial art. These words are not to be taken lightly, they are words with meaning, especially the word "art".

Martial arts is more than self defense, its more than something cool or violent. It's much more than just simple discipline.

Most martial arts, especially Chinese ones, are philosophical. Even without philosophy, each style is steeped in history, chinese or no. These arts were created to perfect and celebrate the human body. Through these techniques we seek efficient ways of utilising every ounce of strength in our bodies.

When it comes to a real fight, no rules, only one thing matters in the end, victory. Victory is important, because defeat may mean the loss of your life.

In that victory, i find it sad that people say "my style enabled me to do this", or when the loser blames the techniques for his defeat.

There is only one truth.

You were defeated by me.
Your defeat proves that you are an inferior fighter.

It is your strength that failed.

There is no need for debate on the styles used, only the truth of a persons ability as a fighter.

As a martial artist, it was not the art that was flawed, but the artist who failed at the art.

This applies to everything in life, a flaw in your art, is to say that the flaw lies with you.

If your car is all banged up, that means you are a bad driver. If you have many pimples, you are bad at taking care of your body. If you lose in a fight, it is because you failed to be the better fighter.

Pros and Cons, each person will do their best to justify their art.

To each their own.

If it works, dont question it.

Yo...

Yo mama so fat, she sweats mayonnaise.
Yo mama so fat, she got a job as the screen in a cinema
Yo mama so fat, she fell in love once and broke it.

Yo mama so big, she comes from both sides of the family.

Yo mama so big, she tried to get up but rocked herself to sleep instead.

Yo mama so big, her head and her toes have different time zones.

Yo mama so dumb, she tripped on a cordless telephone
Yo mama so dumb, she cant spell IQ
Yo mama so dumb, when she was givin birth to you, the whole time she was pushin the doctor instead.

You so ugly, when you were born, the doctor slapped yo mama instead.

You so ugly, the picture yo daddy has in his wallet is the one that came with it when he bought it.

You so ugly, when you were lost in the park and the policeman tried to help you find your parents, he said "its gonna be tough, theres many places they can hide from you."

huff....huff.......huff...........that should hold me over for a few days....

And then there were two...

Yep, got the upper leg done, duplicate the whole thing and bam! Meh, gotta work on my action script comprehension...

Meanwhile, TeeJay and i were discussing the limits of actual power armor or exoskeleton suits in reality as compared to the strength of those displayed in fiction.

An example would be if you had a suit that supposedly, SUPPOSEDLY, amplified your strength by over a thousand times, would that allow you to carry a building off the ground?

Conclusion was no, not with the current materials we have on hand. Unless you had a suit that was structurally strong enough to withstand that much weight, not to mention balance it in regards to your own weight, that building would squish you harder than a grape under an elephants foot.

I love working out these kind of things in my mind, makes you feel that much smarter. I'm no genius, but its these kind of facts that need pointing out, and sometimes, people fail to realise these truths and boundaries. Superman is understandable, cause he is completely organic, and has density ratios that go through the roof, and has one single fact that nullifies any questions about his ability to survive in almost any conditions, hes an alien, duh.

But its the things that we got here on earth that allows you to see through the fantasies of these supposedly realistic technological advancements.

For one, if you had a robotic prosthetic arm, meaning the rest of you was human, and you tried to rip the cannon barrel off a tank, well good luck, because even if your arm could produce that much strength, you dont outweigh the force needed to yank the cannon off, and thus end up pulling yourself towards the tank, cause thats the truth.

The arm will do what its told, and it will perform its end of the bargain, but if you cannot withstand that power, you end up losing ground.

Now, even IF you could root yourself to the ground, your body still has the same old structural integrity of that of a normal human being, meaning the bond of the molecules that make up your body is weaker than the force produced, and the tension will effectively rip you apart at the weakest joint of your body, which would vary from your hip, to your shoulder joint of the prosthetic arm.

Mindfuck eh?

Coming up, discussion of the logics of time travel, as well as events that occur in accordance to time travel, as well as multi-dimensions or parallel universes.

Stay tuned for more...

Dreadnomania

Phew, got some renders out, quite happy that ive got this clay render plugin, it really helps show the details in the model.

So this is the original Dreadnought that i had tried to do, but the proportions are way off, not to mention the structure is all wrong. This is what happens when you dont have proper refs.
So why do i bother to start one from scratch? Well for one, in the industry, if i cant follow the concept artists specifications, what good am i? Accuracy comes before creative input, i can always model what i want to see much later.
This is the back view of the new leg! woohoo, look at that, done in less than two days of work. It may not seem like much, but this is testimony to my improvement. I even got the bevels to come out neater, and my vertice clean up skills just came out of nowhere.
This is the leg in its current state, the way i had built the original knee joint was apparantly wrong. Upon closer inspection to my newfound refs, it seems that the knee joint is not the cool plus sign that i thought it was. its just a piece in the middle, with the thigh connected at the sides, and the side pistons are slapped onto the side of all of that..... yeah you might not get what i mean, but basically its a three part thing in seperate segments, and i have to redo the bulk of it, which i can do easily, its just a matter of time...

More updates to come!

Fresh Start

*Inhales deeply*

New room, new life. Feels good to start fresh, with this new blog comes a new chapter in my life.

I had set out to find myself, but with this i at least have found my way of life. I don't mean to sound zen or anything like that, it's far from wisdom. I just know how to get by in life now.

So onto the less boring stuff. I'm Jason, student who hopes to find his place in the games industry, and perhaps reach some sort of fulfillment being surrounded by what i love most.

This blog will be the jotterbook of my thoughts and progress. Yes, there will be progress.

You'll probably see a lot of 3d.... yeah 3d. I like 3d. So far it might prove to be my ticket into the industry.

So until recently i had been working on a dreadnought, which started out okay, but eventually i took a step back, and realized to my horror that my "beautiful dreadnought" was really a dread to look at. Ugh. Proportions were wrong, scale was all over the place, so many clippings in the mesh, missing edges and vertices that skewed my geometry..... you get the idea.

But one thing i take from all this is the efficiency at which i work. So i started just this monday, creating a fresh Venerable Dreadnought, and thus far, im already up to the thigh on this baby.

Last time it took me two weeks to get this far, but it just goes to show that tinkering around with the same old thing eventually gets you somewhere.

Right now im still working on some details to get out something decent for quick renders for a comparison with my original try at a dreadnought.

I was thinking that after this dreadnought, ill try a hand at designing my own mech. From there, I'll work on organics, and hopefully get a collab with Mel done.

Gotta keep the train movin, or else ill end up in Bumsville again... hope mel holds up with his enthusiasm, cause being alone is kinda demoralizing, especially if im headed for an industry where teamwork is a key factor amongst other things.

Its.....about 3 in the morning.... ill get some renders up before i hit the hay.
